Q:Dear Ashley Davis, How did you go about making a web comic? Were there any challenges you faced upon beginning or half way through? Any advice you can give to other artists? (Thank you for taking time to read and maybe answer this.) -Akihiro12372
Hi there! Thanks for the questions! I’ll try to answer them the best I can!
I’ve been reading webcomics for ages, but I’d had this story (Jailbird) for nearly a decade before I ever thought about making it into one. I was really inspired watching Gigi D.G. and Jones go through the process of creating their own, and that’s when I started to really seriously think about telling my story in that format. I planned (character design and script writing mostly) for about another year before actually starting!
The biggest challenge for me so far has been keeping a schedule (if you haven’t noticed, there wasn’t an update this week). It’s hard not to beat yourself up over it or think that you’re gonna lose all your readers if you miss a day. I’d also like to be able to update more than once a week, but other projects have held me back for quite a while. I’m hoping that won’t always be the case!
The best advice I can give is to Just Do It Already. Even if you think your drawings aren’t good enough or your character design isn’t solid yet or you don’t have enough time. It’s really easy to get stuck in the planning stage forever, and no amount of thinking will fully prepare you for doing, so just go!
Also, read comics! Look at how others do it! Learn! And most importantly, don’t get yourself down by comparing your work to theirs!!! You have to be confident, but also flexible enough to take what you learn from and apply it! I’m starting to ramble a bit! I’m sorry!!
I hope that this helps you or anyone else out there who needs a push in the right direction! Good luck!
UPDATE!
Day five! To most people, dyemaking and dyeing aren’t as exciting as most other areas of magic… but not to Osprey.
I’m going to be at TCAF this weekend! I’m not tabling or anything, but you can find me walking around and hanging out! Come say hi and I will give you one of these!

I hope everyone’s having a good Monday! Here’s an adorable guest comic from the wonderful, fantastic Ashley Davis, who does the adorable webcomic Jailbird! Ashley and I are wed to be married (even though she already has a husband, but who cares about THAT guy) and the wedding will be held at TCAF. I don’t think I told Ashley about our wedding plans, come to think of it… I should get on that.
In the meantime, you should follow her on tumblr and twitter. <3
For those who missed my announcement on Friday, here it is again! I will be at TCAF this weekend! I don’t have any merchandise to sell, but I will be hanging out at the Benign Kingdom booth, assisting them! If you’re going to be there, please stop by and say hi! I’ll draw something nice for you if you do :D
I did a guest strip for Helvetica!! Also, Jones, I DO
UPDATE!
Day four! Owl’s magic specialty is plantomancy, creating a new lifeform out of one or several plants. Most are shaped into animal-like beings or humanoids. The former can occur in nature, so maybe we’ll run into some wild plantimals eventually!
Hey everybody! I’m going to be at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival in a few weeks! I won’t be tabling, but I will be walking around with some cute new business cards that look like this!
Hope to see you there!
